How to Pick the Perfect Tent Campsite
The site you choose shapes the entire camping experience. Here's how to pick well.
Look for Level Ground
Sleep is the foundation of a good camping trip, and sleeping on a sloped surface is miserable. Look for the flattest ground available. If you have a choice, orient your sleeping position so your head is slightly uphill rather than downhill.
At a developed campground, the designated tent pad area is usually the flattest spot on the site. Use it.
Assess Drainage
Never pitch your tent in a low spot or a depression ā that's where water collects when it rains. Even a moderate rain can turn a low spot into a puddle. Look for sites with slight elevation or at minimum flat ground that drains away from the tent pad.
Shade Considerations
In summer: prioritize afternoon shade. The afternoon sun beating on a tent heats the interior to uncomfortable levels and makes everything inside the tent hot to the touch.
In fall and spring: some sun exposure is welcome. Morning sun on a cool fall campsite is pleasant and helps dry any dew that accumulated overnight.
Distance From the Bathhouse
Close enough to be convenient, far enough to avoid foot traffic and noise. The middle distance is usually right.
Proximity to Water
If there's a creek or water feature nearby, it's scenic and pleasant ā but be aware that low ground near water is also the most likely to be damp, buggy, and cold at night. Beautiful view, different camping conditions.
Wind
On open sites, wind can be a significant factor. Look for natural windbreaks ā tree lines, terrain features, even the campground's infrastructure. Wind makes cold camping colder and can be a tent integrity issue in severe weather.
