How to Stay Comfortable Tent Camping in Hot Weather

Missouri summers are hot. If you've ever tent camped in July or August in the Ozarks, you know that the heat is real and requires a strategy. Here's how to stay comfortable.

Site Selection

Shade is everything in summer. When you book your site, prioritize shade — ideally from trees that will block the afternoon sun, which is the most intense. An east-facing tent gets morning sun (warmer wake-up) and shade in the afternoon. A west-facing tent gets afternoon sun baking it for hours. Know your orientation.

Tent Ventilation

Use your tent's ventilation features fully. Most three-season tents have mesh panels that promote airflow — use them. Keep your rainfly off if rain isn't expected and the design allows it. A battery-powered fan inside your tent on a hot night is a genuine game-changer.

Sleep Timing

In extreme heat, the coolest part of the night is typically between 4 and 6 AM. Getting to sleep early and waking up with the cool of early morning is both practical and one of the underrated pleasures of tent camping.

Hydration

Drink more water than you think you need. Camping in summer is physically active, and sweating in a tent overnight adds to the fluid deficit. Keep water accessible all night and drink before you're thirsty.

Cold Sleeping System

Summer sleeping calls for a lightweight sleeping bag or liner, or no bag at all — just a sheet. What you want is breathable fabric between you and the sleeping pad. Cotton sheets are acceptable for car camping in summer; avoid them in cooler conditions.

Timing Your Activities

Schedule your physical activities — hiking, exploring, anything strenuous — for the morning hours. Rest during the heat of the afternoon in the shade of your campsite. Resume activity in the late afternoon as temperatures drop. This rhythm works for the climate and is how people in hot regions have always organized their days.
