RV Camping in Missouri: What to Expect
Missouri is genuinely good RV country, and it doesn't always get the credit it deserves. Here's an honest picture of what to expect when you bring your rig to the Show-Me State.
The Terrain
Missouri is more varied than most outsiders expect. The Ozarks in the southern half of the state offer rolling hills, river valleys, significant elevation change, and some genuinely dramatic scenery. The northern half is flatter and more agricultural. Southwest Missouri — where Neosho sits — transitions between the two and offers good driving with interesting landscape.
For RV travel, the roads in Missouri are generally well-maintained. The highway system is good. Secondary roads vary — some are excellent, some are narrower and less forgiving. Use RV-specific routing and you'll be fine.
The Weather
Missouri weather is famously variable. Summers are hot and humid — plan your electrical usage accordingly if you're running air conditioning. Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping: mild temperatures, beautiful scenery, manageable conditions. Fall in the Ozarks is genuinely spectacular and draws visitors from all over the region.
Tornado awareness is real in Missouri. Know the weather before you set up camp, and know your campground's shelter plan if severe weather is in the forecast.
The Campgrounds
Missouri has an excellent state park system with well-run campgrounds throughout the state. Private campgrounds vary widely in quality. Stage Stop Campground in Neosho is a solid, well-maintained private campground with full hookups and good access for larger rigs.
The Outdoors
Missouri's outdoor recreation is excellent. Table Rock Lake, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the Current River, Roaring River State Park, the Eleven Point River — the state offers world-class fishing, float trips, hiking, and wildlife watching. If you're an outdoor recreation traveler, Missouri will not disappoint.
The People
Midwestern hospitality is a real thing. Missouri campgrounds tend to be friendly, community-oriented places. Wave at your neighbors. Say hi when you walk past someone's site. You'll get it back.
