🍠 Sweet Potato Takeover At Stage Stop Community Garden
They said plant a few. The sweet potatoes had other plans.
This raised metal bed has been completely, gloriously consumed by sweet potato vines. The lobed, maple-shaped leaves are cascading over every edge, filling every inch of space, doing exactly what sweet potatoes do when they're happy — dominate. This is a productive growing setup: raised metal beds warm up faster in spring, drain well, and can extend your season on both ends. The sheer density of this planting tells you the soil underneath is rich and the irrigation is dialed in. Come harvest time, there will be some serious digging happening in this bed. Sweet potatoes are one of those deeply satisfying crops — you plant slips, vines take over, and then you dig up these beautiful roots that seem to appear out of nowhere. Stage Stop is growing something worth coming back for.
