Tent Camping With Kids: What Parents Should Bring
Camping with kids is wonderful. It's also more gear-intensive than camping without them. Here's the practical list that parents figure out the hard way.
The Shelter Situation
Give yourself more tent space than you think you need. Two adults and two kids in a two-person tent is a miserable night for everyone. Get a tent rated for at least two people more than your group size. A tent with a vestibule for gear storage is worth the extra cost.
If your kids are old enough, giving them their own small tent (even just a few feet away) dramatically improves everyone's sleep situation. Kids often love the independence, and parents sleep better.
Sleep System for Kids
Kids' sleeping bags sized appropriately — adult bags on kids are baggy, cold, and uncomfortable. Sleeping pads for each kid. Stuffed animals or familiar comfort items from home help kids settle into an unfamiliar sleep environment.
Clothing
Extra sets of everything for each kid. Kids will get wet, muddy, dirty, and sometimes all three simultaneously. Pack more than you think is reasonable and you'll probably just have enough.
Rain gear for every person in the family. Non-negotiable.
Kid-Specific Gear
Headlamps for each kid — they love them and they're genuinely useful. Bug spray formulated for children. Sunscreen. A basic first aid kit with bandages in a size that covers kid-scaled scrapes.
A bucket or bin for creek water play. Net for catching bugs and small critters. Nature journal and colored pencils if you have kids who enjoy that kind of thing.
Food
Easy breakfasts — oatmeal, cereal, fruit. Snacks in quantity. Kid-friendly camp dinners — hot dogs on sticks, foil packet meals, quesadillas on the camp stove. Save complicated recipes for another trip.
The Secret Ingredient
Give kids unstructured time. Set up the campsite, point at the general area where they can roam, and let them figure out what to do. Kids at a campground given freedom and space will find ways to occupy themselves that are more creative and more memorable than anything you could have planned.
