Things to Do in Southwest Missouri Near I-49

I-49 through southwest Missouri connects more than most travelers realize.

The Joplin Area
Joplin anchors the region at the intersection of I-49 and I-44. George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, the Joplin Museum Complex, and Route 66 heritage are the main draws. Wildcat Glades Conservation Area provides outdoor recreation within the city.

Newton County and Neosho
Thirty minutes south of Joplin — the most underrated stop on I-49. George Washington Carver National Monument, Morse Park, Big Spring Park, historic downtown Neosho, and Stage Stop Campground all within a short drive.

The McDonald County Corridor
South of Neosho, the highway moves through McDonald County — some of the most scenic terrain in Missouri. The Elk River runs through here. Noel serves as the hub for float trips. Quieter and less touristed than areas further east.

Into Arkansas
Crossing the state line, I-49 continues into Bella Vista, Rogers, Bentonville, Fayetteville — the NWA corridor that has become one of the fastest-growing and most culturally rich regions in the South.
