Weekend Getaway in Southwest Missouri: The Perfect 2-Day Itinerary

Two days in southwest Missouri, done right. Here's the itinerary.

Friday Evening: Arrive at Stage Stop

Check in to your cabin or site at Stage Stop Campground on Hammer Road. Get settled, get comfortable, and resist the urge to plan everything down to the minute. Pick up dinner from a local Neosho spot on the way in. Get the campfire going if your site has a fire ring. Go to bed at a reasonable hour — the weekend's best moments are in the morning.

Saturday: Full Day Exploration

Start at George Washington Carver National Monument. Give it a full morning — the visitor center, the museum, the Carver Trail. It's one of the most meaningful sites in Missouri and earns its time.

After the monument, head into Neosho for lunch at a local diner. Then spend the afternoon at Morse Park — 400 acres of open space, Hickory Creek, the pedestrian trail. Walk until you're tired.

End the day at Stage Stop with a campfire and an unhurried dinner. Stargazing after dark — this part of Missouri has enough open sky and dark landscape to make it worth looking up.

Sunday: Morning and Out

Start Sunday at Big Spring Park — a morning walk around the spring, coffee in hand, before the day heats up. Then drive through historic downtown Neosho, go into whatever looks interesting, pick up something local if you find it.

Head out after lunch. If you're routing south, add 50 minutes and swing through Bentonville for Crystal Bridges — free admission, extraordinary American art collection. It's the kind of stop that makes you glad you went 20 minutes out of your way.

A two-day weekend in southwest Missouri doesn't need to be complicated to be genuinely good. The region does most of the work if you just show up.
