What Does Full Hookup RV Camping Mean?

If you've been shopping campgrounds online, you've seen the term "full hookup" everywhere. Here's exactly what it means and why it matters.

The Three Hookups

Full hookup RV camping means your site has all three connections: electric, water, and sewer.

Electric — A power pedestal at your site provides shore power to your RV. This runs your air conditioning, your appliances, your outlets, and charges your batteries. Electric hookups come in different amperages (more on that in another post), but the key thing is that with shore power, you're not dependent on your generator or batteries.

Water — A water spigot at your site connects directly to your RV's water system via a hose. This gives you unlimited fresh water for as long as you're hooked up — showers, dishes, the toilet, whatever you need. No managing your fresh water tank.

Sewer — A sewer connection at your site lets you dump your gray water (sinks and shower) and black water (toilet) continuously. This means you never have to think about your holding tanks or make a trip to a dump station. Your drains just drain.

Why Full Hookup Matters

Without full hookups, camping becomes a management exercise. You're monitoring your water tank. You're watching your holding tanks. You're running your generator when shore power runs out. All of that is fine — many campers prefer it and it's part of the experience at primitive or partial-hookup sites.

But for longer stays, for travelers who want the convenience of home-like living, or for anyone who doesn't want to think about tank management, full hookups change the experience fundamentally. You just live in your RV like you'd live in a house, and the infrastructure handles itself.
