What to Pack for Tent Camping in Missouri

Everyone's first tent camping trip is both more challenging and more rewarding than they expected. Here's a guide to make the challenging parts smaller and the rewarding parts bigger.

Choose the Right Campground for Your First Trip

Don't start with a primitive backcountry site. Choose a developed campground with established sites, bathhouses, and other campers around. Stage Stop Campground in Neosho is a perfect first-timer's campground — accessible, well-maintained, welcoming, and close enough to civilization that you're not truly on your own if something goes wrong.

Practice Setting Up Your Tent at Home

This is the single most valuable thing you can do before your first trip. Set up your tent in your backyard or living room. Figure out the poles, the stakes, the rainfly. Find out if anything is missing or broken. Then take it down and pack it back up. Do this until you can do it without consulting the instructions.

Sleep System

Your sleeping bag and sleeping pad matter more than your tent. A quality sleeping pad is essential — not optional. The ground wicks heat away from your body all night, and without insulation underneath you, no sleeping bag will keep you warm enough. Even in summer, a pad is more comfortable and keeps you warmer than sleeping on the bare tent floor.

Food Simplicity

Your first camping meals should be simple. Hot dogs and foil packet meals over a fire. Oatmeal in the morning. Foods that don't require elaborate preparation and don't create a lot of cleanup. Save the gourmet camp cooking for when you're more comfortable with everything else.

Weather Reality

Check the forecast before you go, but accept that weather can change. Missouri weather especially. Bring rain gear regardless of what the forecast says. Know how to properly stake and guy-out your tent for wind. Know your campground's storm shelter location before you need it.

The First Night

The first night in a tent is always a little strange. The sounds, the light, the ground beneath you — it's different from home. That's okay. By the second night it feels normal, and by the morning of the second day you'll wonder why you waited so long to do this.
